Celebrating 30 Years of Opera Gallery: A Legacy of Artistic Excellence
Celebrating 30 Years of Opera Gallery Monaco
As Opera Gallery marks its 30-year milestone this September, it's an opportune moment to reflect on the gallery's extraordinary journey. From its modest beginnings at Singapore's Tresors Art Fair in 1994, Opera Gallery has evolved into a global institution with 16 venues across major cultural hubs such as New York, London, Paris, and Singapore.
From Humble Beginnings to Global Art Hub
Opera Gallery's story started with founder Gilles Dyan arriving in Singapore with nothing but a suitcase full of artworks by French artists. These artists were not just his contemporaries but also his friends. This bold move led to the establishment of Opera Gallery's first location. The gallery's expansion continued with the opening of a space in Paris, which served as a vital platform for introducing Asian artists to European collectors. This cross-cultural exchange became a hallmark of the gallery's approach, encapsulating the philosophy of "think locally, act globally."
Each new gallery location has been carefully selected to resonate with the local art scene, reflecting Dyan's commitment to authentic cultural engagement. This approach has significantly contributed to Opera Gallery's success and global presence. Dyan acknowledges, "Opera Gallery is not, nor has it ever been, a solo enterprise. The success of the last 30 years has been made possible by my wife and co-founder, Florence; an outstanding team of gallery directors and staff worldwide; our loyal network of collectors and—perhaps most importantly—our artists."
A Celebration of Art and Legacy
To commemorate this significant anniversary, Opera Gallery will host two exceptional exhibitions. The first, 'The Collector 1994', will take place in Singapore and recreate an art collector's apartment from the gallery's founding year. This exhibition will showcase masterpieces by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Marc Chagall, Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, Jean Dubuffet, and Pierre Soulages.
In October, the Paris gallery will present 'Transatlantique: Figurations des années 80', a tribute to iconic artists from America and Europe in the 1980s. Featured artists will include Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf, Robert Combas, Hervé Di Rosa, and Jean Charles Blais. This exhibition promises to offer a vibrant exploration of the artistic movements that defined the decade.
