Monaco Pays Tribute to Formula E! Monaco E-Prix 2025: The Future of Racing Returns to the Principality

From May 3 to May 4, 2025, Monaco will once again host the Formula E-Prix, a thrilling motorsport event held every spring on the legendary street circuit in the heart of the Principality. This prestigious competition, reserved exclusively for electric race cars, showcases the ever-evolving power and technology of electric vehicles. As a key race in the FIA Formula E World Championship, the Monaco E-Prix has become an unmissable event for motorsport enthusiasts and sustainability advocates alike.

A Historic Venue for Formula E

Monaco’s journey with Formula E began in 2015, when it was selected as one of the venues for the very first FIA Formula E World Championship (2014–2015). The city’s demanding urban circuit, renowned for its association with the legendary Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, instantly captivated racing fans.

On May 9, 2015, Monaco hosted its first-ever E-Prix, marking a milestone for electric racing in Europe. Ten teams, including Renault, Virgin Racing, Audi, and Venturi, competed in this groundbreaking event. The Swiss driver Sébastien Buemi (e.dams-Renault) secured victory, making history as the first Formula E winner on Monegasque soil.

Past Winners of the Monaco E-Prix

Since its inception, the Monaco E-Prix has seen fierce competition among the world’s top electric racing drivers.

• 2015 & 2017 – Sébastien Buemi (e.dams-Renault) dominated the first two editions.

• 2019 – Former F1 driver Jean-Éric Vergne (DS Techeetah) took the top spot.

• 2020 – The race was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

• 2021 – Formula E made its grand return, now an annual event. António Félix da Costa (DS Techeetah) secured victory in a thrilling finish.

While Formula E cars may not match the top speeds of Formula 1, the race intensity and strategic battles keep fans on the edge of their seats. The 2025 Monaco E-Prix promises another spectacular showdown on the iconic circuit.

The Monaco E-Prix 2025 Circuit: A Challenge for Electric Racers

The 3.3 km Monaco Formula E circuit features tight corners, high-speed straights, and tricky chicanes, offering a unique test of skill and energy management.

In its early years, Formula E races in Monaco used a shorter track (1.765 km), omitting key sections like Mirabeau Hill and Casino Square, due to battery limitations. However, since 2021, advancements in electric vehicle technology have enabled drivers to race on a nearly identical layout to Formula 1, including:

• The famous Casino Square

• The high-speed Tunnel section

• The challenging Sainte-Dévote and Rascasse corners

With these improvements, the Monaco E-Prix has cemented its status among the world’s most prestigious racing events.

100% Electric Race Cars: The Evolution of Formula E

The Formula E Championship was co-founded by Jean Todt, former FIA President, and Alejandro Agag, with the vision of making motorsport more sustainable. Formula E cars are equipped with fully electric engines, contributing to low CO₂ emissions and promoting eco-friendly racing.

• Early Years (2015): All teams raced with the Spark-Renault SRT 01E, limited to 215 km/h, and drivers had to switch cars mid-race due to battery limitations.

• 2019 Onward: The introduction of next-gen electric race cars doubled battery capacity, eliminating car swaps and enhancing race performance.

Looking ahead, further technological innovations are set to enhance both the efficiency and excitement of Formula E racing.

Monaco E-Prix 2025: Schedule & Race Format

Unlike the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, which spans four days, the Monaco E-Prix takes place over two action-packed days:

Formula E features unique interactive race elements, including:

• Attack Mode: Drivers can gain an extra 25 kW boost for strategic overtakes.

• FanBoost: Fans vote online to grant five drivers an additional 25 kW power boost for 5 seconds.
