Exploring the Iconic Carre d'Or: A Journey through Time and Place
The history of the Carré d’Or in Monaco is closely linked to the city's development as a playground for the rich and famous. The area owes its existence to Prince Charles III, who ruled Monaco from 1856 to 1889. Prince Charles III was determined to make Monaco a destination for the world's wealthiest people, and he believed that a casino would be the key to achieving this goal.
To realize his vision, Prince Charles III turned to the renowned French architect Charles Garnier, who had previously designed the famous Paris Opera House. In 1863, Garnier began work on what would become the Casino de Monte-Carlo, a magnificent building that would transform Monaco's fortunes.
Construction of the casino took over a decade, and it was finally completed in 1879. The building was an instant success, attracting high rollers from all over Europe who came to gamble, see and be seen. The casino's popularity soon led to overcrowding, and in order to keep up with demand, a second casino was built in 1887 - the Salle Garnier.
As the casinos continued to attract more and more wealthy visitors, luxury hotels began to sprout up in the surrounding area. These hotels offered the highest levels of luxury and comfort and soon became the favored accommodation for the elite who came to visit the casinos.
