Uncovering the Fascinating History of the Monte-Carlo Casino: From a Small Gambling Hall to an Iconic Tourist Destination

The history of the Monte-Carlo Casino dates back to the mid-19th century when Charles III, the Prince of Monaco, founded the Société des Bains de Mer (SBM) in 1863. The SBM was entrusted to François Blanc, who went on to establish the Hôtel de Paris in 1864 and inaugurate the first casino in July 1865 on the port of Monaco.

Initially, the casino was a small gambling hall, but with the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century, the number of visitors increased, and the casino's reputation grew. In 1878, Marie Blanc, the widow of François Blanc, commissioned architect Charles Garnier to build the Monte-Carlo Opera House and the new Casino. Garnier designed the casino with sumptuous tapestries, paintings, and Baroque decorations, making it one of the most luxurious and elegant casinos in the world.

Today, the SBM still owns the establishment, which has become one of the great tourist assets of the Principality. Despite experiencing many ups and downs over the years, the Monte-Carlo Casino remains a favorite destination for jet-setters from all over the world. Its evenings are known for glamour and exclusivity, and the Red Cross Ball is a highlight of the social calendar, attended by international stars and Prince Albert II.

The Red Cross Gala in Monaco is an annual charity event that takes place in the summer, usually in late July or early August. It is one of the most important events in the social calendar of the Principality of Monaco. The gala is organized by the Monaco Red Cross and is attended by members of the Monegasque royal family, international celebrities, and high society from around the world.

Over time, the area surrounding the casinos and hotels came to be known as the Carré d’Or, or "Golden Square," thanks to its opulence and exclusivity. Today, the Carré d’Or remains one of the most sought-after addresses in the world, a place where the rich and famous come to live and play in unparalleled luxury.

Monte-Carlo Casino is a must-visit destination for those looking for a taste of the high life. The grandeur and opulence of the casino, coupled with its rich history, make it a truly unique experience.
